About Standing Trees:
Founded by volunteers in 2020, and incorporated as a nonprofit in 2021, Standing Trees’ mission is to protect and restore forests on New England’s public lands. To overcome the climate and extinction crises, Standing Trees envisions a future where New England’s state and federal public lands, spanning approximately 11% of the six-state region, are managed to restore the natural, old growth forests that evolved over millennia alongside the region’s indigenous people. To achieve this ambitious goal, Standing Trees combines creative grassroots and grasstops organizing, strategic coalition-building, policy advocacy, and legal expertise.
Standing Trees serves as a watchdog for state and federal agencies, ensuring that land-managers follow the latest climate and biodiversity science, promote the public good, and meaningfully involve the public in decision making. In addition to public land protection, we engage in policy and legal advocacy to end New England’s reliance on biomass electricity and other egregious commercial exploitation of public forests.
Standing Trees stands up for social and environmental justice, and seeks to build a diverse, inclusive, and equitable movement for public wildlands.
